Homeboy Music: Troubador

Troubador is an indie outfit from South Jersey, with ethereal female vocals and piano-driven ballads composed by a semi-rotating cast of characters, most of which I went to high school with. Focused primarily on lyrics, they sound like a less-processed Eisley without the background vocals. Catch them live this Friday at The Loft in Audobon with Swie Back (expect an upcoming profile) and This Is Capture. Click the flyer to RSVP on Facebook.

Show Review: Jimmy Eat World’s Clarity Tour (by Brittany Eltman)

On February 25th a friend and I took a train down to Philly to see one of our most beloved bands. We grew up with Jimmy Eat World, a "heart"rock outfit from Mesa, AZ, so the show was centered around nostalgia, both for us and for the band. You see, Jimmy was touring to commemorate the 10th anniversary of their celebrated (and underrated) album Clarity. We were very lucky, and a little crazy to have gotten in, as all of the shows on the Clarity x 10 Tour had sold out within a month of the on sale dates. I had never been to the Troc before, but I found that it had a kitschy atmosphere with a touch of the skeevy. Perfect for intimate shows, even if they are sold out. Aside from the very tall man with messenger bag right in front of me, visibility was great. I was surprised at how close we actually got to the stage.

First up was opener Reuben's Accomplice, a five member band with an atypical female drummer. RA had a classic pop punk vibe, amplified by the Clarity-esque heartfelt lyrics and vocals. I was especially impressed with the group's ability to switch up, and play each other's instruments. Bass guy went to lead guitar, lead guitar went to accessory perc, accessory perc guy picked up a guitar, and everyone kept it awesome. I was more impressed than I thought I would be. However, during their set, it was pretty obvious that everyone in the venue was waiting for Jimmy.

I speculated for a second whether Jimmy would play the Clarity album straight through, as released, or whether they would mix it up, but as soon as Jim Adkins, Rick Burch, Tom Linton and Zach Lind started up "Table for Glasses", I knew it would all go in order, as released. Which was just about perfect. My friend and I knew every word to every song, as I'm almost positive every other audience member did. It was neat to see a variety of age demographics as I looked around. As Jimmy has been together since 1994, it makes sense that they would draw such a wide range. Highlights for me include: the chorus of "Your New Aesthetic" which determinedly screams "Take Back the Radio!", the whole song of "Believe in What You Want", the three song chill set of "Ten" (surprisingly good live), "Just Watch the Fireworks" (which was almost my prom theme!) and "For Me This is Heaven" (absolutely awesome instrumental bridge, band got super into it), and "Goodbye Sky Harbor".

Now, "Goodbye Sky Harbor" is normally 16 minutes long, with extensive looping and jangly guitar/synth dialogues. With a live performance, the band did live looping and recorded playback with lead singer Jim Adkins doing a nerdy dance with the mic. This was absolutely priceless. Though, it wasn't quite comical. It was Jim Adkins, just as he is. It was honestly pretty cool. It was a marvelous rendition.

The band took a quick break and returned with a unique second set, starting out with "What Would I Say to You Now", a driving and angsty oldie from 1998. I was surprised at the choice, but it worked, especially followed by "No Sensitivity", a great lost song I hoped I would hear. They continued with some better known material, including "Pain" and "Work" from Futures. The best song of the night, hands down, was "23". After announcing that they had a request, and that they hadn't played this song in a while, Jimmy launched into one of their most beautiful songs. I was ecstatic. Listen to it and you'll see why. Maybe.

The band closed with "Sweetness", one of their most popular songs. As we belted out the last few words to this accessible anthem, I smiled with an inward satisfaction. I have never been to a better concert. Whether due to nostalgia, familiarity with the band, or the fact that they simply are excellent showmen, it doesn't really matter. Whatever it was, something special was in the atmosphere of that show, and I felt it, to be sure.

Show Review: Flatfoot 56

Last night's b-sides was Christian Celtic/Oi! punk band Flatfoot 56, and they put on a great show. Highlights included a wall of death, circle pits, a student Irish dancer invited onstage, a cover of the Beach Boys' "Do You Wanna Dance?" and their closing rendition of "Amazing Grace". I had a great time, despite getting my favorite hoodie stolen and possibly breaking my right pinky. Catch them in Wilkes-Barre, PA tomorrow or at the Shamrock Fest in DC this weekend with Flogging Molly. Here's a brief message from the band and music video:

Buzz Band: Max Tundra

The gloriously nerdy Max Tundra makes bizarre electronic music that could be termed (IMHO) post-pop or something like that... It's glitchy, composed (this album at least) on a Commodore Amiga 500, which was considered 'low-end' when it was built in 1987, and prefixmag describes it as "the soundtrack to an '80s brat-pack movie gone horribly wrong". Here's one of his jams, an ode to deceptive internet relationships:

Despite the video, all this weird is indeed the brainchild and output of one man, Londoner Ben Jacobs. Catch him on tour with Junior Boys when they come through this area in early May.

Showbread Tour Cancellation

Showbread just cancelled their upcoming tour due to a death in the family of drummer Ricky Holbrook. Read their blog about it here. (via Indie Vision Music) I've updated the March Madness upcoming shows schedule to reflect that, as well as adding dates for Idina Menzel at the Keswick Theater and N.A.S.A. at the Barbary.

Show Review: Will Gray and Gretel

Last week's b-sides was an epic night of folk and hip-hop. Folk and hip-hop? Yeah, you didn't read that wrong. Opening with folk trio Gretel, who accompany their beautiful harmonies with everything from electric bass and banjo to a saw, the show saw Will Gray beatbox along with them, and then frontwoman Reva Williams join Gray's band Gravy Sauce as a banjo player and background vocalist. Gravy Sauce also included a DJ, cellist, acoustic guitar, and a hype man/rapper called Jay Bling to accompany his conscious raps and R&B crooning. They seemed to have a little something for everybody. It was a great show. The two bands know each other through a music program in Martha's Vineyard and are both passionate supporters of the arts in general, speaking around campus and filming a documentary about how to be a patron of the arts as a starving college student. I highly recommend their music, their shows, and their thoughts on the arts.
Here's a music video from Will Gray to give you an idea of how unique his music really is:

Show Review: Lydia, Black Gold, and All the Day Holiday

Last Tuesday (the day, not the band) two friends and I headed down to Philly to see Lydia at the Barbary. My ex had actually told me I should check them out a few months ago when they were opening for Copeland and Lovedrug, and I got on the list with Universal Motown, so it was free.

lydia tour ecard2

Openers All the Day Holiday were a young band with a very Britpop sound-vocals reminiscent of early Coldplay crossed with Keane, along with instrumentation that sounded like Coldplay minus the keys, plus a more driving rhythm section. They put on a good show, overcoming a few technical difficulties (including a broken kickdrum pedal). They're from Ohio, and evidently friends with a musician/photographer/producer friend of mine that I saw at the show and should be doing a Homeboy Music entry on soon.

The next band, Black Gold, reminded me for all the world of those bands that play in the prom scene in 80s high school movies. Reggae-influenced guitars occasionally breaking into DFA-style dance riffs were the order of the day, fronted by a keyboardist with vocals that sounded like disco had a child with 80s glam rock. The occasional ballad/slow dance jam didn't detract from the generally upbeat feel, though much of the audience didn't seem to get into it due to the differences between them and the other bands playing.

Lydia was obviously the band most of the crowd was there to see, judging by the screaming of teenage girls when they took the stage and the epic sing-a-longs on nearly every song. Frontman Leighton Antelman, with his less angsty Chris Carraba vocals and champagne glass grip on the microphone, glided around the stage, frequently jumping up on the monitors to extend his mic into the crowd to hear their "beautiful singing". The music, the show, and the intimacy with the fans (made clear by the band playing songs called out by the audience throughout) constantly reminded me of the days when 'emo' was not about black hair and wrist-cutting, but sensitive boys and the girls who love them, harking back to old Dashboard, Brand New, Death Cab, and Sunny Day Real Estate. Lydia is hardly a band stuck in the past, though, with instrumentation that evoked mewithoutYou and artsy post-rock outfits. They put on a good show, despite Leighton's admitted sickness and the use of a few backing tracks (probably to cover up that sickness). Here's the frontman and lead guitarist doing an interview with Kiwibox:

The Barbary, as a venue, is interesting. What basically amounts to a dive bar in North Philly, it has become a hipster haven, playing host to epic parties and R5 Productions' shows. Due to its nature as a bar/club first, venue second, all-ages shows start early (6:30 for this one) and end by 9:30 so the bar can open at 10. The party that particular night is a good example of the usual goings-on there... Fight Club is a monthly event where DJs put their names in a hat, and when their name is called they have to do a beer bong of PBR and a shot of whiskey, then play a 20-30 minute set. Crazy stuff. On the venue front, it's great for small, intimate shows (like weeknight indie rock shows with small but loyal fanbases) and stuff like that, as long as you can be out by 9:30.

$99 Music Videos

Just found this sweet website called $99 Music Videos, which does exactly what you would expect: makes music videos for $99. Talk about indie. Here is the first one they posted, "Let Me Kiss You Now (And I'll Fade Away)" by a band called Plushgun.

Pretty good for $99, don't you think? I'll be recommending them to all my friends' bands...

What Is Hip-Hop?

This is not hip-hop:

This, on the other hand, is (via A-Trak):

Show Review: Jim Bianco

Bluesman Jim Bianco put on quite a show last week here at Messiah. His performance elicited laughter, foot tapping, head nodding, and more than a little shock. Telling stories of previous trips to Messiah that ended in off-campus parties with female students and stalking bartenders back to their homes, he came off as more than a little creepy to some students. Others thought he was hilarious or awesome, a feeling increased by his strong, raspy voice and great storytelling ability-both between songs and in his lyrics. Comments I overheard included: "This is baby-making music. I don't know if Messiah can handle this." and "I love his voice!" The man makes good music, whether because of or in spite of the sexual tension and man-of-the-world vibe he portrays, I'll let you decide. Read an interview here and watch this video live from his kitchen, since I can't post his music video due to somewhat inappropriate content (NSFW for all you blog kids).
PAINKILLER- live from my kitchen

Show Review: Micah Dalton

Micah Dalton played b-sides here at Messiah back on February 18th. He put on a pretty good show as I recall, some chill but funky acoustic stuff. He and the guitarist/mandolinist he brought with him kept it interesting with some witty banter and the occasional solo (both improvised and written). If you like Jack Johnson or other similar fare, I'd recommend you give him at least a listen. His extensive catalog serves well for summery days or those days you really wish were summery. Check out my friend Karl Schlobohm's brief interview for the Swinging Bridge here.

Homeboy Music: House Exit

House Exit, a Mechanicsburg rock outfit fronted by my friend Matt Hannigan, has gone through a few incarnations, and currently consists of Matt on guitar and vocals, Wayne Trump on bass and backing vocals, and Mike Nebistinsky on drums. Check out a review and four wma downloads here. You can buy their latest album on CD Baby, and check them out live at Juice & Java Saturday the 21st. Click the poster to RSVP on Facebook.

Homeboy Music: Sam Coakley

Singer-songwriter Sam Coakley has been doing this music thing for quite a while now. His mastery of the piano and love for good stories have joined forces to produce music impressive in both quantity and quality. Though he only has one physically released EP, a live performance will reveal his vast store of other material and the extent to which his songcraft has improved over the years. According to Tim Mackie of campus newspaper The Swinging Bridge:
Upon hearing Coakley perform, most listeners immediately draw parallels with Billy Joel and Elton John, and indeed Coakley cites them as his major artistic influences. "If you're going to play pop music on the piano, that's pretty much all there is" he said. After being introduced to these artists by his piano teacher, Coakley began writing his own music at age fourteen out of a profound dissatisfaction with the mainstream pop zeitgeist. "I figured I could write what I wanted to hear better than what I was hearing on the radio." (full article here)
Though he usually performs solo, he is occasionally joined by drummer Mark Hunsberger as The Sam Coakley Trio, and plays with a full backing band on his EP, available on iTunes. Sam plays shows around campus somewhat frequently, usually at the SouthSide Cafe, as well as occasional gigs at bars and coffeehouses. If you get the chance, by all means go see the show. The atmosphere is usually somewhat intimate and allows you to really appreciate his lyricism as well as musicianship.

Subways Are Awesome

"Hot Stuff" on a Chicago subway (via Fully Fitted)

Reminds me of all the time I've spent on trains since my van died in NYC (story here) over the summer on the way to see Santogold (now Santigold). Not to mention the awesomeness that is Red, the Homeless G-funk Beatboxer:

As well as the awesome bands I've seen on streets, in parks, and other random places like these:
New Krokodillos Muy Internacionales (Barcelona, 2006)
percussion jam session (Central Park, 2008)

Articles in the Swinging Bridge

I had two articles published in the entertainment section of the most recent issue of our campus newspaper, The Swinging Bridge. I figured I'd post links up so you can check them out at your leisure...
